I received the specs for the spine from Image Comics which was the last bit of information I needed in order to complete the digital files for the printer - One step closer to the published book.
I'm so glad Kazu encouraged me to make Rex a part of Flight, back in 2004 at Long Beach Wizard Con. It's been rewarding to see the book taking shape year after year!
The Saga of Rex is 200 pages, 7" x 10", full color and you can pre-order it from Amazon.com for $12.23. That's quite a deal!
I've recently updated the webpage for the book with previews of all the chapters. Check it out.
Matt's Tattoo
August 18th, 2010
Last time I was in Los Angeles, I was fortunate to have lunch with a bunch of my old comrades from the animation industry. One of them was Matt Maners, who used to be my assistant on several films while I lived in Los Angeles.
About ten years ago, Matt got an interesting tattoo which surprised the heck out of me. After completing the inbetween drawings of the "Atomic Bullet" animation I did for Osmosis Jones, Matt returned the scene with one of my key drawings tattooed on his shoulder.
Since I had my camera with me, I took the opportunity to take a picture of it. Below is the frame from the movie where the design appears. Click here to see the video.
Sensology Internet Premiere
August 4th, 2010
Now that Sensology has had its three-day theatrical run in Los Angeles (which will allow me to submit the film for Academy Awards consideration), I am free to share the film with the rest of the world. I uploaded a HD 720P version on YouTube. If your connection allows for it, I strongly suggest you watch the film at the 720P setting. Click here to view.
Double Spread in Diamond's August Previews
July 31st, 2010
The Saga of Rex is featured in the new Diamond's August Previews in a full color two-page spread.
I'm really excited to be working with Image and I'm thrilled with the attention they're giving the book. I was told that The Saga of Rex was a big hit at the recent American Library Association Conference which bodes well for its future.
It's an interesting experience working with a seasoned publisher instead of trying to do everything myself. I'm learning to delegate and that's a good thing - you can accomplish a lot more that way. Self-publishing was educational, but at this point in my career, my time is better served focusing on the creative aspects of my various projects.
Sensology Premiere Schedule
July 28th, 2010
I'm back from California (more on that later) where I had a private screening of the DCP of my finished short film, Sensology. It was great to see the film at 2K resolution on a big screen. I hand delivered the DCP to Laemmle Theatres for this coming weekend's premiere. The film will play at:
Laemmle's Fallbrook 7
6731 Fallbrook Ave
West Hills, CA 91307
(818) 340 8710
Screenings are Friday July 30th, Saturday July 31st and Sunday August 1st at 2:00PM and 5:50PM.
Sensology
July 15th, 2010
It's hard to believe that my new short film is finally completed after nearly four years since I started doing the animation. I put in the final touches last weekend and my friend, Joe Campana, did the 3.1 mix for theater configuration. The film clocks in at exactly 6 minutes!
Sensology is an abstract animated visualization of a 1995 landmark performance by two avant-guarde musicians, Paul Plimley and Barry Guy. I recently collaborated with Barry and Paul on Fixed Fragmented Fluid, which I also hope to turn into a movie at a later date.
The files for the completed film were shipped to Qube Cinema in oder to master a DCP for digital theaters. I will see a screening of the film on July 26th at the Qube facility to make sure everything looks good. Then, I will be delivering the DCP to the Laemmle Theater.
I will post the exact theater location and screening times as soon as I know them. Hope some of you can make it to the premiere.
Flight 7 Preview
July 4th, 2010
Kazu and Jason just posted a preview for Flight 7, including 2-6 page excerpts of each story in the book.
Flight 7 will be released at San Diego Comic-Con this year. Feel free to stop by the booth and say hi to several of the Flight artists, who will be there all weekend signing books. If you won’t be at the show, you can also pre-order the book on Amazon, or look for it at your local bookseller on July 20, 2010!
Fixed Fragmented Fluid
June 30th, 2010
The show was a huge success! But not without its share of traumas...
We had several technical problems during the week before the premiere, and I had to operate with very little sleep. I felt that I was faced with obstacles that seemed unsurmountable... yet we prevailed. Thanks in big part to my wife, Nancy, who took a proactive role in the performance by becoming my technical assistant, and to Barry Guy, whose extreme professionalism shaped the presentation. In the end, everything worked out fantastic, and the sold out audience gave us a standing ovation.

The band was absolutely incredible, Barry, Maya, Peggy, Paul, Lucas, Peter and Evan - all fabulous musicians, creative thinkers and great people as well. Hanging out with them for a week was an enriching experience.
A huge thank you to Rainbow Robert and Ken Pickering, from Coastal Jazz; and to Ben Laurence for saving our butts with his technical expertise.
I think it's safe to say that we haven't seen the last of FFF.
